Best ribs in town! I have learned over the years that I will be disappointed by other restaurant's ribs after having ribs at Bert's! They are delicious fall-off-the-bone and consistently perfect. We also ordered the Chef's Favorite sandwich which is a version of Philly Cheesesteak and it was also delicious. Service was excellent! Burgers are a hit and Mexican food surprisingly good too. Prices are reasonable. Fun diner atmosphere.

This review is based on 2 visits. The first time I made my husband leave because the place was filthy. Like don't touch the table or utensils filthy! He thought I was being over the top. So he talks me into a 2nd try and we made it through brunch. Because I did not point out that that the place was, again, FILTHY! I kept it to myself, until the decaf coffee pot returned to refill and he noticed the nastiness that was attached. Then he looked down at the floor and almost lost it. Then he looked around at grossness that seemed to cover every surface and we left. NEVER AGAIN. It's too bad too since the food and service were good!

It must have been an off day today for Bert's. I go to have some plentiful and great tasting food. I have been here numerous times and have never been disappointed. Today was different. We get there and we get seated at a filthy table and seats. Go to next table..... almost as bad. Server wiped down both tables and looked kind of irritated that I ask for a clean table. We order our meal and in a reasonable amount of time it shows up. My wife's waffle was very hot and good looking. Very thick and large waffle. My meal had one pancake one egg, one sausage patty and a small portion of potatoes. The only thing hot was the pancake. Our server dropped off our plates and we never saw her again until we were just about done eating. I sent the plate back after eating only the pancake. The server made no apologies, no attempt to fix the problem other than taking off the meal after I ask her to. I did pay $3.00 for one medium size pancake which was not worth the charge. All the servers uniforms looked old, ragged and filthy. In general, the place has gone downhill over the last few years to the point that we may not go back. They do serve plenty of food for the money, but the service and cleanliness has been sacrificed big time. It is a dive..... but they should at least give the servers new uniforms, clean the place up, and serve hot food that is supposed to be hot. It's to bad this place does not have a web site. I would complain there too. Also it would be nice if the owners went to yelp to see how they are doing.

This place has shamefully slid downhill over the years. What used to be a great burger & Americana type food joint is now mediocre at best. About a month ago, we had dinner (both of us had deluxe burgers) and they were horrible. The death nail in the coffin though was the shear amount of flies both in the inside and outside dining areas. The owner must be either asleep at the wheel or his managers must have better things to do I'm figuring. I can deal with a bad burger now and then but when multiple customers are complaining and leaving dye to the flies, you might wanna get that taken care of before the County Health Department looks into it.

The rule here seems to be quantity is better than quality. I love diners and diner food. There is nothing better to me than a greasy spoon place. That doesn't mean that it has to be bad. There was one place near where I lived that was fantastic but a total dive. So it is possible. I ordered a scramble of some sort. It came with the usual sides of bacon, and I upgraded to a biscuit with some gravy. It was all good, but nothing stellar. There was also WAY too much food on that plate. Like there was enough calories for that to be it for the day, possible even day and a half. I saw people shoveling in platefuls of food into their mouths and just thought that this was only their breakfast (not that I can judge too harshly). By far though mine was the best at the table. My mom, who we were visiting, got one of their Mexican dishes for breakfast. It lacked any of the traditional flavors of a good Mexican breakfast. My fiance got the steak and eggs. The steak was grey, tasted off, and was basically inedible. The service was bright and friendly. You could tell this was a very local place with tons of regulars. I'm glad places like that still exist. I just wish the food was better and a little less on your plate. That is what would keep me coming back here. 21/100

Waitresses are great, but food is bad at Bert's diner. I got the mushroom and cheese omelette with country potatoes. The bottom of the dish was soaked with this yellow greasy fluid. After using about 15 napkins to soak it up, it just seemed to continue to drip down from the eggs and potatoes. My guess is that they use a lot of oil to cook the food. It's a cute 50s style diner that has a lot of potential but I won't be going back anytime soon.

Just a mom n pop diner the service was excellent the food was average but the price is good for the portions we (the wife and i) got country fried steak with side of hashbrowns and eggs wwith biscuits and corn beef hash with a side of biscuits n gravy and sum total was only 21$ its a deal!!

Bert's has gone down hill! The place is dirty and the service was slow! Its really to bad! Unfortunately, I don't think we will be back. The food was, just okay.

As usual the food was excellent. Everything was cooked to perfection and absolutely delicious. Service was excellent, personable and the whole experience was one I want to repeat again.

I really like the entire experience at Bert's Diner. We're new to the area and have eaten there twice now and enjoyed it very much both times. I've had the traditional American cheeseburger and fries and the Mexican chimichanga. Both offered large portions and were delicious. Though all the wait staff were pleasant and professional, we especially enjoyed Phillis. She is very personable, professional, and attentive to all the customers. She's also great at learning and remembering names. We look forward to trying the breakfast menu. So glad Bert's is in Sheldon. Give it a try. You won't be disappointed.

Bert's is, by far, the best breakfast place in Elk Grove. The bacon, avocado omelet and hash-browns is the perfect hangover food. Portions are large and I usually take half of it home. The one area they could improve upon is cleanliness.

Great food, always great service with a smile, the specialty burger was huge, almost not enough bread though. Asian chicken salad is bomb diggity. And their milkshakes bring me around.

Service was great, food was decent. Nothing great about the food but good solid reliable diner food. The 4 stars if from the service.

Strawberry waffle $7.99. I won't have it again very bland waffle and strawberries seem like poo preserves not very good. Breakfast plate $5.99 very good and filing. Service wasn't anything special. It's an average restaurant. Food came out fast. Not very crowded. I'll probably go back but I won't have the waffle.

I always come to Berts for their breakfast since I believe they are the best in town. I've gone to every joint in Elk Grove and simply Berts is the best. Phyllis the waitress is very professional and checks up on me every so often. I always get eggs, bacon, hash browns, and sourdough toast. Yes, it's a very basic order, but it's executed perfectly every time. I can't say enough about their hash browns in that they a crispy and golden brown on the outside yet very moist inside! I can't stand hash browns that are dry like sawdust, which describes most of the breakfast spots in town. In fact, the ONLY place that serves better hash browns is Jodys in Albany (in the Bay Area). Give Berts a shot-you won't be disappointed!

Always a fun place to visit, great food, great service...but... they need to get their juke box system repaired so the controllers in the booths operate correctly..

The best diner ever! Food is heavy and delicious, burgers and fries can't be beat. Love their shakes and Mexican food. The breakfast pancakes are sooo good, and their ice cream is yummy. Atmosphere is really fun, can't ever go there without seeing friends from Wilton and Old Elk Grove. Service is simply terrific.

I go here lots! I eat the same stuff every time and need to try some new stuff here. I enjoy this place but it needs to clean up. I simply mean a over hall of the place could be a good thing. Its getting a bit old and could use some love. I also find the music could be expanded a bit too. Would love to see some attention this year to the place. Great location and fair food yet this place needs a hug.

Good service, Big portions. Went Sunday morning for breakfast. Haven't been there for years and it is still busy and doing well. I had pork chops and eggs, Wife has Eggs Benedict. The eggs were cooked perfect on both plates, Country potatoes were tasty and fresh, Hash browns crispy, although the chops need seasoning, even salt and pepper would help. We ate outside and the flys were smelling the food and came to eat. Not to bad (10) but needs some help to cut them down. Yes it is outside but still need help. They use ham and not Canadian bacon which is a plus in my mind! All in all it was good. Not great but very good. I wont go out of my way to go there but if ever passing through Wilton again I will stop. Oh Yeah....Really liked to old time diner outfit on the waitress! Made a 50 year old look 30! lol

This diner is always busy. Why? I have no idea. I had my first experience last weekend and it wasn't a great one. I arrived (before noon) with two family members, the inside was packed, so we sat on the patio. I glanced at the menu, which had lunch/dinner options, and didn't see anything that sounded too appealing. Mexican food at an all American diner? I could already envision unauthentic Mexican food and an upset stomach. I was REALLY in the mood for breakfast. Anyway, our female server showed up to take our order at 12:06PM, I asked if I'd be able to order breakfast, she said breakfast stopped at noon and that it was too busy inside for the cooks to make anything NOT on the lunch menu. We were there before noon, WAITING, but OK. I decided to go with a burger (safest choice), and asked if I could substitute the hamburger meat for a veggie patty. No such luck -- no veggie patties. Awesome! The server suggested a salad. I appreciate the suggestion and me being vegetarian wasn't her problem BUT if I had wanted a salad, I would have kept my ass at home and made one. I decided to order the chile relleno, against my better judgement, and it was disgusting, really. I realize the dish is deep-fried in egg batter but this was overwhelmingly greasy and fatty, it made me sick. Also, why the hell am I being charged $1.49 for three corn tortillas? It's a "Mexican" dish that is served with rice and beans, yet tortillas aren't offered? Strange. The only reason Bert's Diner is receiving two stars instead of one is because my two family members thought the food was OK. I truly think it was just them being famished while waiting 40+ minutes for our food to arrive. NEVER. AGAIN. Pro: * Good music * Nice patio area Negative: * Inside area and seating appears dated/dumpy * One bathroom * RIDICULOUS 40+ minute wait for three entrees (1 hamburger, 1 chile relleno, and 1 BBQ beef sandwich) * Inattentive server

Yuck. We should have followed our instinct and turned right around when we walked in and saw how dirty the floors were. We used to love stopping here but things have really changed. The waitress' uniform was dirty, the bathroom was dirty and the food was marginal at best. What happened to Bert's?!

Drove by many times without stopping. Seemed popular. Finally did stop. Owners have "checked out" - need to sell to someone with a little pride. Place has lost its lustre and is shabby/dirty. Evening meal Food awful. Service: nice but disinterested servers.

Just a Keep-In-Shape ride yesterday... to Wilton, CA... Haven't seen so many people at Bert's Diner... since I came in on a Saturday morning last year... or was it a couple of years ago. Enough people to keep three waitresses running around in a hectic manner. I was thinking a Banana Split... but it was a pretty cool ride yesterday afternoon... and I didn't want to get too chilled on my ride back to Lodi, CA. So... it was either their (huge) Pancakes or something I have never had before at Bert's... On the menu... Machaca con Huevos (**** $8.99) ( s3-media4.ak.yelpcdn.com… ) When the Machaca came out... it looked visually impressive... on an eleven inch wide Oval Plate. The Machaca was your standard Machaca scramble... Shredded Beef, Eggs, Onions, Green Bell Peppers, Tomatoes... and (canned) Jalapeno Peppers. Never have I had Machaca with Jalapeno Peppers... Came with sides of Refried Beans and Mexican Rice. This Machaca from Bert's would have received a higher rating... if you don't look too close... I observed that the Chef was really stingy with the Shredded Beef for whatever reason. I really wonder why Bert's is so stingy with this Entree... when almost every other Entree is rather large in size and volume? Flour Tortillas (*** Came with Entree) Just your average store-bought 5" wide Flour Tortillas. Liked the fact that the Chef grilled the Tortillas before handing it out to the customer... Salsa (**** 1/2 Complimentary) The waitress asked if I wanted some Salsa to complement the Entree. Even though Bert's doesn't provide Tortilla Chips, I wanted to taste test the Salsa. Well... Bert's makes one of the best Salsas that I've had at a restaurant... regardless of the ethnicity of the restaurant. The difference? Bert's Salsa is a very chunky Salsa... large pieces of Tomato (looks like it came from a can, though), Parsley, chunks of raw White Onions (not too large) in a Tomato-ey Hot Sauce. In my reviews of Hispanic restaurants, I always have wished for a "chunkier" Salsa where I can discern the ingredients. There's one detraction, though... the Salsa comes in a small 2 1/2" wide little bowl... that would be fitting for a child's place-setting as a Toy... I had to ask for about three Salsa bowls... Water (FREE) About five refills...

I love this place and don't get in nearly enough. It's just what you would expect from a roadside country diner. It's not perfect but the food is great and the people are friendly and always interesting.

The breakfast at Bert's is definitely the best! It's always busy in the morning so you have to make sure you're prepared for a wait.

SOLID 4-star eating. Also, a unique experience. Unlike the duplication of 50s themed Mel's in San Francisco, Roseville (Sacto area) and even Reno (damn it), Bert's Diner stands alone in its replication of an aluminum clad 50s diner and in this neck of the woods of this metro area. I've only been for breakfast and it's excellent. The portions are enormous and the service is friendly, efficient, and kind of crusty ... all at the same time. There are the typical American mega platter items and then some Mexican themed breakfast items as well, though I have always opted for the former (omelet or eggs, potatoes, breakfast meats, and toast). The thing about this place is that it's a road trip in and of itself. Since the redundant Sacramento vibe drones on and on, Bert's is found either from the west or from the north, where Sacto suburbs have thinned out into wooden fences along the road with horses peering over them, cows behind them, and/or the occasional McMansion randomly placed on some huge lot. Also, one can buy a commemorative t-shirt at this place ... that is, if you want to look like Guy Fieri. No thanks to that.

Really good food and service was great! We had a large party and they were very accommodating with turning on the outside heaters. Chips were delicious. I had the taco salad with chili verde so good! My husband had the ribs he loved them! We will definitely be back!

If I had a choice I wouldn't give them any star. From the food to the service. Living in the areas of 10 year. Thought I would give this place a try by now. Saw an advertising in a coupon book. Read "Vote best Mexican food" by who I wonder????????????????????????. Coupon read buy1 get 1 dinner. But my husband didn't want me to use it. He wanted to support the local business. Ok I won't. He order a New York steak medium. Came well done could kill someone with it. I guess It hard to cook it medium if it was frozen. Friday night special was the clam chowder. Came from a can. If there was a next time I would ask them to heat it up in the microwave for at least a full minute. I order a BLT double deck. Double alright with an extra piece of bread between the sandwich. Two bacon on top 2 bacon on the bottom. Bacon was pre cook burnt to a crisp DRY. My kids has corndog. How can U go wrong with cooking a frozen corndog. By not frying it long enough so that the raw batter inside don't stick to the hot dog. We left with our table full of food. End up using the coupon because it was not worth the full price. I should have know from the minute I sat down and the other table stood up. All their food was on the table too. Where are all the diner food meat loaf, pot roast, chicken fried steak ???? They should call it Mexican food with a side of burger. P.S. service SUCK. Didn't ask us how we doing. I guess they knew by looking at our table. Everything has about 1 bite to it. Or they should be use to it by now.

One of my favorites, and a place I first missed because I drove down Wilton Rd. when I was out skimming the edges of Elk Grove for new places to try once, only to find it online later when I checked a map. You definitely get away from the more populated parts of the city when you're here. I love a classic diner and even though this place dates back to around the 80s it has that suitable 50s feel to it, down to the mini jukeboxes at the tables and the wide cable car sort of layout. Knowing what to expect when you go to a diner like this, their food tends to meet my level of satisfaction. I've enjoyed the burger, I liked the cheesesteak, and their Mexican food is definitely worth a try. They made a tasty chimichanga, the nachos were solid, and their chips and salsa are also pretty good. Last time I was there I went off my beaten path a bit and tried the BBQ Beef sandwich because it's an old favorite of mine dating back to a long-gone sub shop I ate at as a kid, but I didn't care for the flavor of their sauce here. That's a hit or miss thing because of the sauce itself, though. If you've had one at Togo's, you probably know what I'm talking about. I've taken family members here and they've all enjoyed it, so that's enough for me. I've never had a problem with the service, either.

We've been coming here for more than a decade. Always huge portions and fun service. But over the years, I have noticed they tend to fail at efficiency when it comes to busy Sundays. However; today it hit an all time low. the Waitress, whom i don't remember her name(really dark hair middle aged) Was beyond rude. She has begotten progressively worse, but today it was awful. Food was OK, it took nearly 8 minutes to bring an entire order out for just 5 of us. The food was okay :-/

I've been twice in the last month, once on a Saturday evening, and tonight on a Friday evening. The restaurant just feels like. The owners no longer love it. The menu, combining a hamburger diner with Mexican restaurant seems oddly out of place. The decor, 50s diner themed, has nothing to do with Mexican cuisine. I can tell from past reviews it was once a great place, and would like to see it reach its potential again. I'd recommend all American diner favorites... I'd like to see Bert's regain its former glory.

Throwback is the word that comes to mind when I first enter this 1950's style eatery off Grant Line Road. We were greeted cheerfully by the daughter of a family (great job, Bri Metcalfe)friend as a vintage song (Tammy Wynette) plays on the jukebox (controls at each booth). The kicker?? Mexican food, breakfast food, and STEAKS!!!! This is what Johnny Rocket's tries to be. No corporate feel here... Small, locally owned... That's the ticket. Get here!!!

Berts Diner is a classic, old fashion diner, straight out of the fifties. This is not a "want to be diner" with new fake replicas and tons of plastic. This place has character, it is the real deal. The glass block walls, classic diner entry doors, and exterior clock entice you in. As you walk in, a cash register divides twin soda fountain style counters with blue formica tops, rimmed in chrome. Chrome bar stools with blue seats line the counters. A large juke box sits in the corner playing music from the fifties. A waitress dressed in a short diner style dress, leads you across black and white checkerboard flooring to a booth with soft red leather seating and blue formica tables. Each booth is equipped with a miniature juke box. Our waiter was extremely personable and funny. He did a masterful job of helping us choose our orders and delivering our food. I ordered the 12oz. New York steak and eggs, with biscuits and gravy. My delicious biscuit was so large I had to slice it up with a knife like a loaf of bread. The eggs were cooked to perfection and the mounds of home style potatoes were peppery and had lots of green onions. My "cooked to order steak" was not the best New York steak I have ever eaten, but for ten bucks it was pretty damn good. The Wizard says, check it out.

We went on a Monday and they were busy. We waited only 5 minutes to get a table. It was 50% off all burgers on Mondays. The waitress came by pretty fast and got our drink order. I had the mexican food once before and it was good. Oddly enough a Diner has Mexican food and they use ground beef in their enchiladas which nobody else seems to have. I ordered a 3 item combo and shared with my 5 year old daughter. She ate almost the whole burrito herself! She doesnt usually eat too much but she really liked it. My wife ordered the Guacamole burger and it was big with large bacon strips. The service was really good and the waitress outfits are cute with the Diner theme. The apple pie ala mode is good too.

Since my move to Sacramento, the spot for shared breakfast with my parents moved to a place more centrally located between us, and Bert's has become it. This place is the definition of diner, and it's great. Since the list of cons are small, those will come first: Some of the vinyl seating is in need of repair, and there seems to be always at least one fly buzzing around to deal with. Yep... that's it. The good: Service is great. Food is fast, fresh and plentiful. Don't think of the place as a greasy spoon... some menu items are particularly Californian, done perfectly. (Order the Avocado Omelette.) Or... OMG the pancakes. They are fantastic... and if two of you want pancakes, you could probably do with one order. Om my best day I don't think I could eat two of them. It looks like a '50's diner outside and in, and I can't imagine a 'modern diner' from 60 years ago being much different than this place is now.

This location is so cute. It is like a legit retro's diner feeling. I LOVE IT! The location is a bit hard to find, because it hides. The parking is a bit small. And seating is a bit small. IF one would ignore all the items that needed to be fixed, and see how cute the place is and how the people are they would notice a true gem. This place serves BIG portions. One dish could serve 2.5 people or 2 or one person depending on how much a person eats. Their pancakes are made for 4 people. It is nice and fluffy and delicious. The maple syrup, is good. They have different items on the plate, which i believe that a person can find what they want. I ordered and omelet here, and it was a big portion. They give a choice of hash browns, or just potatoes. I would recommend you to order the potatoes. Their potatoes are GOOD! Hash browns are hash browns, they cook the hash browns, good. it is a big whooping portion, and they are cooked until crispy. But you would have to try the potatoes they have here, its seasoning and crispy texture, is awesome. The prices that they have are good, and expect the food to come out fast and fresh. i would tell all my friends to come here and eat one day, because this place isnt something that should be missed. The customer service is good, the people are nice and friendly.

I usually eat here for breakfast and it is very good. However, my wife and I decided to eat here for dinner on a Tuesday night for the $9.99 New York steak. BIG mistake!!! No pun intended. Our "steaks" had more fat than meat. My wife could not even eat hers. I realize it was only $9.99, but at least it should have more meat than fat. I told the waitress and she said she was sorry and went on to tell me that they hand cut each steak. I guess they did not inspect ours. VERY DISAPPOINTED!

Our second visit to Bert's was not a success. My husband was looking forward to some chicken fried steak, when we stopped in on Saturday at Bert's recently. Stopping at the 'please wait to be seated' sign, we were greeted by a waitress with a 'Hi.' Then nothing else happened. Nothing. The same waitress passed twice. Nothing. Another waitress rang up patrons, poured coffee, and walked by. Nothing. Someone in the kitchen saw us. Nothing. Nothing happened. Really folks? I don't think I need to time our stay standing by the cash register waiting to be seated to justifiably complain that we were treated like furniture or a gum machine. Not a 'just one moment and we'll get you seated.' Not one 'let me clear this table to get you folks seated.' Nothing. We walked out and will not be returning.

Ordered a sandwich and after a couple of bites noticed the turkey was GREY. I didn't eat any more and now I am pretty sick. Kind of a grimy looking place. There was a dead fly stuck to the wall right next to me. Really grossed me out. The staff seems nice but that didn't keep me from getting mild food poisoning. I don't get the positive reviews. Update: yeah, I had food poisoning all night after eating there. Thanks for the stomach cramps, Bert's!

I think the only reason this diner is busy is the location and curiosity. I went there with a friend and both our dishes were okay at best. The waitress was a young model type who said her boyfriend hates her working there because of the guys hitting on her. The only reason I give 2 stars instead of 1 is because they wear nice uniforms and it gives it the diner look.

i saw a myraid of different american and mexican dishes on the menu. being too afraid to try the mexican dishes, i ordered a burger. my little girl ordered the nachos. boy was i wishin i would have ordered mexican. homemade tortilla chips and refried beans? grilled chicken? yummy. i will go back and try a mexican dish and re-review.

Wow! who knew a cute diner existed in Elk Grove? Portions are HUGE and the price is really good. Shared the Two, Two, Two with my sister...we barely ate half and were super full. Pancakes are light and fluffy (and HUGE). Country potatoes ( bought as a side) are crispy and packed with flavor. Also got to try the biscuit and gravy, which was also good. We had a party of 9 adults and 4 kids and were seated right away on a Saturday morning. Food came out quickly Service (waitresses) was a little weird, but overall okay.

cute place near my favorite feed store. I ordered the mushroom cheese burger, cooked to perfect med. rare & husband got the Texas burger well done beyond belief b/c that is how he rolls. so least he was satisfied. came with a large portion of fries and each burger was $8.00; large sodas with crushed ice which I prefer so much more. no need for refills in the winter but server was pleasant and still asked. Brought the check not so early which is good and no way could I handle any desert. My only complaint was the sign I'd seen outside for weeks states Monday Nights Burgers 1/2 off ...great -- website states buy one, get one free. but WE GOT NEITHER DISCOUNT not sure what is up with that...we'd still top off the original amount --- I would hope the servers don't pocket the difference (once client has left) if you know what I mean b/c that is just dishonest.

Service - 5 Stars Food - 3 Stars Bacon - 4.5 Stars Extra Cooked Hash Browns - 4.5 Stars Value - 4 Stars It has been a long time since I have been in to Bert's Diner. Maybe only because it is a bit out of my way. I've never had a bad experience here. Today I went for breakfast and I was not disappointed. The staff is prompt, the place is clean, and the food is a good value. I ordered by standard breakfast fare of 4 pcs bacon, 2 eggs - basted, 2 slices of sourdough bread, extra crispy hash browns, and a cup of coffee. My water and coffee never went less than half full. Good start for a tip from me. The staff and cook was prompt. My sourdough lacked a bit of flavor, but I have yet had a local sourdough that wows me. Seems everyone buys it from the same spot. I crave a thick slice of good sourdough that kicks the taste buds, any suggestions. I ordered my eggs basted, and they were a bit overdone. I like runny yolks so I can dip the bacon and bread into it. These had just turned hard. I will probably go back later this week. Out of all the local places, this one has the best value. Under 10.00. I am a happy camper

We've eaten here a few times for breakfast and lunch, and it's great every time! The staff leaves something to be desired at times, but the food is always A+!

I made the mistake of ordering a burger and nachos one time. The burger meat was funny tasting and the nachos, as good as it looked, had some stale chips and day old guacamole. Now I order the chicken sandwich every time and it always hits the spot. Grilled chicken breast with bacon, swiss cheese?, lettuce, tomato, pickles and mayo with a heaping pile of thick fries. It would be really tough to mess up this order. I only wish it was not as expensive.

We had passed by this diner several times, so when my niece came to visit Elk Grove, we headed to Bert's for lunch. We were seated right away and it was then I noticed the windows. Really dirty. We ordered and as I looked around the booth, I noticed this restaurant was filthy. My niece commented that this is "only what we can see". Ew... The floors hadn't been mopped in forever and the mud remnants from the storm over a week ago were sill on the floor, the foot rail and stool posts. My niece spilled her water and I'm sure that mishap created the only clean spot in the restaurant. Against my better judgement, we stayed and ate. Lunch of sandwiches, burger and beef tostada (more fat than beef) was marginal and the service was passable. Kind of spendy, $40 for 3. As we left, one of the kitchen staff was outside in public view smoking which was just about right considering our experience. We won't be back. I'm not a clean freak but this place was simply unacceptably filthy.

Service with a smile would have been nice. Not very friendly service and only a very few things are worth getting.

Yelpers' beware sometimes in the restaurant business there is a wait especially when the food is made to order, and lord yelp you if a place is busy and has to clean your table before seating you. My favorite is those of you who can't respect the employees if they asked you to move, could it be possible that one person took a reservation the other employee didn't know about? Elite Yelpers' sorry this isn't your usual egg white and kale breakfast spot. After all its name is Bert's Diner you can expect a 5 star diner atmosphere and food quality. REMBER NOW ITS A DINER NOT A HIGHEND YUPPIDY DINNING EXPIERENCE SO STOP GIVING IT BAD REVIEWS. THE LOCALS WILL ALL TELL YOU TO GO BACK TO YOUR HILL TOP HOUSE OR TO STOP BY WHOLE FOODS BECAUSE THIS IS A COUNTY DINNER WITH AMAZING DINER FOOD.I would highly recommend the Ultimate burger, Texas burger or taco salad for lunch or dinner. Also the staff is super nice and helpful.

My husband and I stopped in on a weekday for lunch. The place was pretty dead but, we still had to wait 15 minutes to be acknowledged. When our waitress did come over, she wasn't friendly or even attentive. She dropped our menus down and said " I'll be back." She didn't ask us how we were....If we'd like drinks.... nothing. We ordered our meal and in about 20 minutes a different waitress brought our food out. I asked waitress # 2 how she was and If I could have another bottle of ketchup. She pointed to the bottle on our table and said " what's wrong with that one?" I showed her how nasty the bottle was and how ketchup was caked around the side. She said " so? you need another?" After that, both girls disappeared to the back and neither of the came back. We had to walk to counter and ask for refills and our check. Our table and silverware were dingy and the service stunk. In spite of all this nonsense, I decided to give Burt's a second chance. ( I mean - look at all the great reviews! I must have gone on an off day.) Nope. I went back again with a girlfriend midweek in the afternoon. We walked in and the waitress behind the counter told us to sit anywhere. We sat next to the window, and waited. and.......waited. The waitress behind the counter looked over and turned back around. Another server looked over and said " That area is closed. You can sit over here." My friend piped up and said " uh... The waitress told us to sit anywhere." And he replied " And, I'm telling you to sit here." Needless to say, we left.

Went here for breakfast with some friends on a weekend. The food was a pretty good deal. My meal was under $10 and came with a generous portion of corned beef hash, home fries, a couple over-easy eggs, and a huge house made biscuit. It's pretty hard to mess up corned beef, but Bert's version was good. The home fries were pretty tasty and cooked the way I like 'em, crispy - almost burnt on the outside, and soft and fluffy on the inside. Eggs were just fine, and the biscuit was huge and flaky. I wish mine was baked maybe just another 1:30 or so, and it didn't show up with honey. I would consider biscuits and gravy if I returned. The coffee was on the weak side, and I would definitely pay more to have real cream or half and half on the table. The service was pretty good, and our server was funny albeit a bit overdone. Luckily, I'm a good sport. However, I definitely did note that the place was pretty dirty so minus a star as in I'm afraid of what the kitchen looks like. I know it was a busy weekend service, but a lot of what I noticed looked like it had been neglected for awhile. Some things I noticed include dried ketchup on salt shaker, dried something on glass on ice cream case, dingy floors, pile of swept up but not picked up trash and dirt near bathroom, dirty ladies' toilet, and something stuck to my shoe. Also, I was totally excited to play some songs on the main jukebox, but the page turner buttons didn't work.

My husband and I have been passing this Bert's Diner for years as we travel to Lake Tahoe, using the Grant Line Road shortcut. Today, though, we wanted the BBQ place behind it, but being Sunday, the BBQ place was closed, so we decided to try Bert's Diner....and this was our experience... We walked into the restaurant and the first thing I saw were the filthy dirty floors. We were directed to a table. The table was dirty so the waitress went to get a cloth to clean it with. She just wiped the crumbs from the table onto the floor. As she was doing this, I noticed how dirty her uniform and apron were. Not just dirty from the days work, but grimy from not being cleaned. And the other waitress's uniform was the same. We sat down and ordered something to drink while we looked over the menu. When we ordered, I asked if I could substitute something for french fries (she'd told us they were frozen fries). She named off a list of things I could have and one of them was cantaloupe. I asked her if she realized that cantaloupe from Colorado was a recalled produce at this time? And she said no. So I ordered my burger and told her no cheese...and she snottily asked "why, was there a recall on that too?" I told her no, I have allergies to dairy. So my husband and I are sitting there, looking around, talking about the dirty floor and dirty uniforms. My husband pointed out the condiments on the table. There was dried, caked ketchup on the ketchup bottle, dried mustard on the mustard bottle, crystallized hot sauce on the hot sauce bottle and believe it or not, the metal napkin holder was sticky and there were napkin pieces stuck to the napkin holder. The fan above our table was dusty. The neon lights had greasy dirt on them. The walls had food on them. The ice cream counter's window was smeared and dirty. The more I looked around the more I thought about KITCHEN NIGHTMARES and wondered if it was this dirty in the front of the house, how dirty was the back of the house (Kitchen) ? My husband and I decided to pay for our food and leave without eating. We got up and told a waitress we decided against eating here but that we'd like to pay for what we ordered so we could leave. She looked confused when I told her I couldn't eat in a place that was this dirty but got our waitress and again, I explained we didn't want the food, we wanted to pay and leave. The waitress only charged us for the milkshake that was brought to our table and didn't charge for our meals...and we left.

We moved here three years ago from Bakersfield, CA we have a place called 24th Street Cafe we have been looking for that kind of homemade food. Bert's Diner is it great coffee, that's a big thing to us. We saw some of the orders coming out, large plates heaped with food. The prices are reasonable too, great for family's go early long line when we left. Wonderful server ask for Phyllis she has been working for 20 years same place.

I have been going here for years and will continue to return, good mix of food with large servings; from any beakfast to cheese burgers to chili verde and all with good pricing too. If you do find your self at Berts don't forget to get one of their milk shakes! Always friendly hostesses and a fun family atmosphere, one down side is it is on the small side with only maybe a dozen tables and some counter seating on the inside but during the warmer months they do have outside seating that helps. Just remember it is a diner and the service is quick but dont expect white table cloths and you'll enjoy your visit.

I've been coming here since I was young and it's consistently been fantastic! You wouldn't expect a diner to have Mexican food as well, but welcome to California :) Their chimichanga is huge and amazing and the bacon cheeseburger is a classic. Sipping on a pineapple milkshake while listening to oldies playing from the jukebox and watching cowboys, old timers, families and friends have a great time? There's nothing more comforting!

When you see this ultra 50's Diner - you expect Diner menu favorites... instead.. we opened our menus to see 2/3 Mexican Food and maybe 1/3 American food. Where's the diner food???? This is a Mexican Restaurant that serves a small American sandwich menu. Disappointing.

Love the groove of the place. You just dont see too many old fashion diners anymore. The food is okay/good, way better than Dennys thats for sure. I mainly go for the Milkshakes.

I love this place. It looks really nice. The reason I am giving three stars is because the food is good most of the time. Sometimes the food is excellent and sometimes it is not. The last time I went there with my boyfriend our food was burnt and a little dry. but the food is great most of the time. and the waitresses are super nice.

Bert's Diner is one of mine and my husband's favorite places to eat, since he grew up eating there and we both love nostalgia. They have an impressive menu (that includes the usual diner foods, plus Mexican and some seafood dishes). I usually order either a burger or the fish and chips, both of which are really good! The service isn't always as good as the food. The waitresses occasionally come across as cold and the food sometimes takes a while to be made. Otherwise, this place is really cool. Give it a try if you're into diners, since it's definitely a step up from Denny's.

We have been taking advantage of their Monday night burger deal. All of their burgers are half price! Where else can you get a great tasting burger with fries for about $4? The waitresses are all great, I never have to ask for a refill of my soda. I've never tried Bert's for breakfast but after reading the reviews here, guess where I'll be Saturday morning?

My husband and i eat at Berts occasionally ,the food has been good ,portions are large enough to split. I have to agree with others the uniform are dirty and the hostess had on a T shirt that was disgustingly dirty. Why does the health department not notice?

This place is a good diner to go to. this place makes me want to be driving an old 50s car to come to this place. the inside is very retro and nice. the food was very good and made this a place i would want to come back to again.

Nifty classic diner tucked away in a corner of Elk Grove that won't let you down. Inside and outside it has that throwback look and feel that you would expect and the menu is standard American diner/mexican fare, nothing way out there where they're trying to do something fancy. The place was pretty busy on Saturday during lunch but we were quick to be seated at the counter and our drink/food orders were taken in good time. I had the patty melt with a vanilla milkeshake, my buddy got a burrito grande. The food itself took a little longer than expected to arrive but once it did everything was good. Patty melt and fries were solid, my buddy said his burrito was outstanding; plates cleaned, bellies full. I'd have no problem going back to Bert's if American diner/mexican food was what I was craving.

Bert's is the best thing going for where it's at. If you live out in or near Wilton like I used to, this is the place to eat if you don't want to eat at home or drive "into town." While they are missing some standard diner fare, their Mexican food is strangely where they shine. It seems odd to order and eat Mexican in a 50's themed diner, but that's the magic of Bert's. Don't forget to bring some quarters to put in their jukebox!

This is such a cool 50s style diner, located in Elk Grove. Everytime I am up visiting family in Rancho Cordova, this is a diner we love eating breakfast at before getting on the 99 fwy to head home. The staff is friendly, and the food is just so flavorful. Watch out on Sunday mornings, because they get very very busy. You could wait up to an hour to sit down, if your party is bigger than 4 people. But it is worth it. The clientele are all lively and friendly, and portions are very generous. Small diner, and gets a little cramped when it is all full. But, it is still pretty comfortable overall. Enjoy your meal!!

For a fun 50s diner atmosphere, this is the place. For great diner food, there has to be better options. The menu includes sandwiches, a few steaks, salads, Mexican food and hamburgers. Not sure where the chicken fried steak is, a staple of diner food. The server was friendly but could not remember the soup that was ordered before the meal. The salad was forgotten as well. When I let her know that I no longer wanted the bowl of soup, since the entree had arrived, she was surprised and did not remember the soup had ever been ordered. Bert's Big One was featured on the menu as a diner broiler steak...well, it was big but had a very strange flavor. Definitely pass on the steaks at Bert's. Most people were eating the hamburgers and a few had the Mexican food. I will go again and try the breakfast just because I really loved the building.

I had been to Bert's once before for breakfast and was impressed then by the food and the service. This time I took my favorite dining partner so she could experience what I had been talking about. Bert's is on Grant Line Road near Sheldon Road and I suppose some day it will be just another restaurant among strip malls along this soon to be freeway once the county expands this shortcut from I-5/99 to Folsom. Till then it is a nice trip back into small town, non elitist America where cycles and pickup trucks dominate the parking lot. The wait staff were all friendly and were quick refilling water and coffee. The food was hot and generously portioned. We had the Avocado Omelette and Mushroom Omellete which were both huge and delicious. Be sure to order the biscuit as your "toast" as it is about 4x4x4 inches and comes with whipped butter and honey on the side. I love the Tammy Wynette playing in the background and the jukebox stations at the tables. The condiment bottles and napkin holder could probably use a little elbow grease with a warm rag but then it adds a little to the character when everything is not so homogenized. Worth a return trip and make sure to turn your coffee cups over if you want them filled.

there is one reason i gave this place 4 stars. Grilled chicken sandwich. it is the best grilled chicken sandwich i have ever had... the chicken has a certain flavor that is very good=) but...(you knew there was going to be a but eventually didn't you) i have to say, that other than that, it is very much a greasy spoon, mexican food was not very good ( if you want good mexican food go down grantline to a place called barn door tacos they're attatched to a country like store shaped like a barn) and the place has some issues with clean dishes, i have found floaties in my water a couple times and had to get new utensils numerous times because there was leftovers on them...but staff is very friendly and attentive...o and one other reason for the 4 stars, they have the slushie ice =D

Went here for the first time last week. Super small interior! But did i dig it! My girlfriend and I didn't want to wait for a booth so we sat at the bar seats. (not an actual bar BTW) Its old school at its best, with a mexican twist. Kinda like walking into a diner in oaklahoma except with a california feel. Lady walked right up flipped my coffee cup over and filled me up without even asking, if i were a snob i would be offended, personally i loved it. The food is well priced and god damn you better have an antacid on hand if you can't handle greasy food. Massive breakfast portions and it was delicious, i can't wait to go back to try lunch and dinner. The also have mexican food which is funny and awesome all at the same time. Recommend it to anyone that likes diners in general, its not for folks that eat at mikunis if you know what i mean......:)

The decor was 5 star. I love the look of the place, inside and out. The service was pleasant and prompt. The food was very good. I had country fried steak and eggs with a giant biscuit and a side of gravy. The gravy is the best I've had in Sacramento. The reason for the low rating is the cleanliness. The place is dirty. Very dirty. The coffee cups are filthy. The server, who was very pleasant, looked as if her apron and uniform hadn't been washed in recent memory . I would have given Berts Diner 4 stars if it were cleaner. Berts Diner is really cool, the food is good and the service is good. It just feels dirty, not the place as much as the flatware, cups, glasses, silverware and condiments. It was good but, I doubt I'd go back. It could be nice if it were cleaner.

God I miss Berts. I now live in LA, but used to live in Wilton, about 5 minutes from the place. I would go there at least a couple times a month if not every week. Especially when they had there 2 for 1 tuesday nights, or some promotion like that. I don't know if they still do that, but I do know that I am going home for Christmas and am going to make it out to Berts to get some good food. There are places in LA that are trying to be like Bert's. They try way too hard to look like just some ordinary diner. The beauty of Bert's is that they aren't trying to be anything they aren't.

We went here for dinner. The food was very good. More than I was expecting from a diner, but that wasn't the best part. The pie was awesome!!! Tasted home-made just like my mom's. Definitely recommend this place. Especially if you have an entertainment book with a buy 1 Entree get 1 free coupon.

I grew up in this diner. As a small child I counted down the days till our weekend outing to Berts. The Chocolate shakes were perfect for my school-age tastes. As I evolved to high school, the cheeseburgers were all I needed to survive. As I have matured, I delight myself in the healthy hearts menu and make sure I have my quarters all rolled up and ready to rock the jukebox.
